The Misconception of Childbirth Classes
Remember the Friends episode with Ross and his ex-wife in their childbirth class? Childbirthing classes peaked in the 1980’s and 1990’s but have been declining ever since. Part of the reasoning for this is the depiction of childbirthing teachers as hippie, new-agey, and without a medicine background. While these may be preconceived notions, they are generally far from the truth.
A childbirthing class is a good idea for a couple of reasons. The first is that it can help you be prepared for what might happen. The childbirthing class will run over the basics and will also provide information on potentially troubling births. You can be better prepared should you encounter trouble in your actual birthing process.
Options During Labor
Another good reason for a childbirthing class is that you will know your options when it comes to your birth. There are so many different options to choose from when choosing how you will give birth to your child. It’s helpful to know about the options you have during labor, birth, and postpartum.
Meet Other Parents
It also allows you to feel connected to a group of people, as you get ready to give birth. It can be wonderful once the baby is due to have friends with a baby the same age. As your children grow, you can continue to get together as your children become better friends.
Good for Dad
Birthing classes are also nice for dad because it allows the man to get a better understanding of what a real birth will be like as well as what he can do to help in the process. It also lets him leave the steretypes behind and become increasingly involved and aware of what is coming. An informed and invested dad is always a good thing.
